Studying Cybersecurity Online in New York

New York's online cybersecurity options span a SUNY community college, public bachelor's degrees at SUNY Canton and UAlbany, and a long list of private schools from Syracuse to the Bronx. The public schools publish a New York resident rate, and the private ones do not, so residency is the first thing to settle.

Two schools lean toward management and policy, and a few build their whole master's around hands-on labs. If you live outside New York, our best online cybersecurity degrees list shows how these schools compare with programs elsewhere.

Method

How We Chose These Programs

A program appears here when the school is based in New York and the degree is delivered fully online, with the school's own pages confirming it. We read each program's price, length, courses, certifications and admissions from those pages and from federal college data.

New York has 16 qualifying programs, so every one is included. Within each degree level, the order comes from our shared scoring of cost, graduate earnings, completion and online experience. The methodology page explains each measure and where the data comes from.

  • School based in New York, program delivered online
  • In-state rate shown when the school publishes one
  • Scored on the same seven factors as every list and ranked inside its degree level

    Bachelor's

    Excelsior University

    Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

    School based in New York

    • Fully Online
    • Asynchronous
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #1: 100% of its undergraduates study fully online (the highest share among bachelor's programs on this list) and it charges $510 per credit (lower than 4 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

This Albany-headquartered college suits New Yorkers who already have scattered credits and want one degree to gather them. Cyber Attacks and Defenses sits beside Large Scale Cybercrime and Terrorism, so the curriculum leans toward how incidents unfold, not just how to harden a server. The Cyber Operations concentration is optional, and the degree has no capstone or internship requirement listed, so build your own portfolio.

    Bachelor's

SUNY College of Technology at Canton

    Cybersecurity - B.S.

    School based in New York

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #2: it charges $353 per credit (the lowest among bachelor's programs on this list) and 63.5% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (higher than 5 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Canton is the budget route to a public New York bachelor's. Required cluster courses in both data security and network security keep you from specializing too early, and Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing gives the offensive side a place. The NSA Program of Study Validation dates to Fall 2022. Transfer applicants need a 2.0 GPA, and no certification study is built in, so plan that separately.

    Bachelor's

    University at Albany

    Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

    School based in New York

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #3: its graduates in this field earn a median $95,885, its school awards about 87 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among bachelor's programs on this list), and it charges $424.46 per credit (lower than 5 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

UAlbany lets you aim the degree: the Cyber Risk Management and Policy concentration points toward oversight and governance roles, while Cyber Defense and Cyber Operations stay technical. A New York resident can combine it with a fully online internship for the experiential requirement. Online pricing applies only if you enroll in a fully online program, so confirm that before registering for classes.

    Bachelor's

    Syracuse University

Bachelor of Professional Studies in Cybersecurity Administration

    School based in New York

    • Fully Online
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #4: 66.5% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the highest among bachelor's programs on this list), but its school awards 6 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest among bachelor's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Syracuse builds this degree around running security, not just fighting attacks. Courses include Enterprise Risk Management, Digital Forensics, and a newer one on securing artificial intelligence, and the NSA validates the program. If you already hold 90 transfer credits, you'd pay for about 30 credits at $750 each. Expect a mix of live and self-paced sessions, which suits fixed work schedules less well.

    Bachelor's

    Monroe University

Bachelor of Science in Computer Networks and Cybersecurity

    School based in New York

    • Fully Online
    • Private for-profit

Why it ranks #5: 23% of its undergraduates study fully online (a higher share than 4 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list), but 52% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (lower than 5 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Monroe leans toward the network side of security, so the coursework lines up with six entry-level exams: Cisco CCNA and CyberOps Associate, plus CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+ and Cloud+. Ethical Hacking is the featured course, and online students get 24/7 tutoring. Why it ranks #6: it charges $560 per credit (lower than 3 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list), but 49% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the lowest among bachelor's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Hilbert suits busy adults who want predictable weeks. Every course is asynchronous and runs eight weeks, with six start dates a year, and textbooks come free. Intro to Network Security and Computer Crime build toward a required three-credit internship, and the coursework points at Network+, Security+ and CISSP exams. At $560 per credit, 120 credits is $67,200, but a $351 resource fee applies to every course.

Why it ranks #7: 57.5% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (higher than 4 of 6 other bachelor's programs on this list) and its graduates in this field earn a median $68,529, but its price of $990 per credit is the highest among bachelor's programs on this list.

    In-State Facts

Mercy covers the technical core with Linux Administration, Cryptography, Network Security, Digital Forensics and Penetration and Hacking, then closes with a System Security capstone (IASP 470). A five-year B.S./M.S. dual degree lets you earn both credentials sooner. Part-time tuition is $990 per credit plus a $75 cybersecurity fee each term. In-State Facts

Excelsior is based in Albany and holds Middle States accreditation, so New Yorkers get a home-state school without any commute. The hybrid option meets in St. Petersburg, Florida, which means people in New York will be fully online. Security Policy and Compliance and Information Assurance make this a governance degree. In-State Facts

St. Bonaventure built its master's around cloud labs and a new Cyber Operations Center funded by a $450,000 federal earmark. Courses run seven weeks with no GRE, but admission asks for a computer science, cybersecurity or similar bachelor's with a 2.5 GPA. It fits working technologists, and the lab-heavy format will frustrate anyone who wants a policy degree.

Master of Science in Cybersecurity (Online)

    School based in New York

    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #3: its graduates in this field earn a median $152,422, 77.5% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the highest among master's programs on this list), and its school awards about 252 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

NYU Tandon is the research-minded pick in the five boroughs. Students can work with the NSF-funded OSIRIS offensive security and incident response lab, and the blended option lets online students add classes on campus when they are nearby. A programming background in C++ or Python is recommended, so it is a harder entry than most. Skip it if you want a management degree.

    In-State Facts

This one reads as risk management for hospitals and public agencies as much as for corporations. Pick the Cybersecurity and Privacy of Health Information concentration if you work near patient records, or Cyber Risk Management and Compliance for the technical side. Expect to line up two recommendation letters and a personal statement. Technical readers wanting red-team practice will find less of that here.

    In-State Facts

The forensics label draws people, but only the Cybersecurity track is fully online, so ask exactly which courses you can take from home before enrolling. The 3 to 6 credit summer internship or thesis is where the degree turns practical, and an employer who can host you makes it easier. In-State Facts

Hilbert designed this for the person who will run the security program rather than log into the console. Financial Crimes and Cybersecurity is an unusual course that ties fraud to digital tools, which suits banking and compliance staff. Admission needs no GRE or GPA, only a statement of purpose. Yeshiva University

Master of Science in Cybersecurity (Online)

    School based in New York

    • Fully Online
    • Asynchronous
    • Private nonprofit

Why it ranks #7: 65% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (higher than 6 of 7 other master's programs on this list) and 30% of its graduate students study fully online, but its price of $1,445 per credit is the highest among master's programs on this list.

    In-State Facts

Yeshiva's online students use the same Security Operations Center tooling as on-campus peers in Midtown: SIEM, EDR/XDR, identity management and cloud security. Coursework maps to Network+, CCSK, CEH and CISSP, and any accredited bachelor's degree qualifies, so a non-technical graduate can enter. The list price is $1,445 a credit, so the roughly $19,000 total depends on the STEM Fellows Scholarship.

    In-State Facts

This is a 30-credit degree that most students finish in 1.5 to 2 years, aimed at people who already work near technology. Admission asks for a 3.0 GPA in a related field, a resume, a personal statement and one recommendation letter. New York Residents Get Real Discounts at Public Schools

Five public programs at three schools post two prices. Herkimer County Community College lists $225 per credit for New York residents and $309 for everyone else. SUNY Canton charges residents $295 and out-of-state online students $353. The University at Albany bundles tuition and fees at $366.46 for its bachelor's and $540.38 for its master's programs when you take fewer than 12 credits, against $424.46 and $634.38 for non-residents.

The private schools quote one number. Excelsior charges $715 per credit for its master's and $510 for its bachelor's, Hilbert charges $560 for its bachelor's and $830 for its master's, and Mercy charges $990 for its bachelor's and $1,147 for its master's.

Before comparing, add the fees. Hilbert's course resource fee is $351 per course at the bachelor's level and $369 at the master's level. Herkimer adds a $50 cybersecurity curriculum fee each semester. Mercy adds $75 per term for the bachelor's program.

Governance Degrees and Hands-On Lab Degrees Are Different Products

New York's master's programs split into two camps. The Excelsior M.S. offers General and Information Assurance concentrations, UAlbany's Cybersecurity and Risk degree offers Cyber Risk Management and Compliance or Cybersecurity and Privacy of Health Information, and Hilbert's M.A. centers on leadership, risk management, policy and financial crimes. Those fit people heading toward oversight roles.

The lab-first camp looks different. St. Bonaventure uses cloud labs and lists CISSP, CEH, OSCP and Certified Network Defender as aims. Yeshiva runs security operations center labs, and NYU points to the NSF-funded OSIRIS offensive security and incident response lab.

At the bachelor's level, UAlbany lets you choose Cyber Defense, Cyber Risk Management and Policy, Cyber Operations or a self-designed concentration.

Check the Programming and GPA Requirements Before You Apply

Admission bars vary more than price does. Mercy's master's lists programming as required, plus a 3.0 GPA in a related field, a resume, a personal statement and a recommendation letter. NYU recommends programming experience but does not make it a requirement. St. Bonaventure wants a computer science, cybersecurity or similar bachelor's with a 2.5 GPA.

Some doors are wider. Yeshiva asks for a bachelor's degree from an accredited college, and Hilbert's master's lists no GPA requirement, though a GPA below 3.0 should come with two academic letters. If your degree is in another field, Mercy points to a partnership with the NYU Tandon Bridge Program for students without a computing background.

SUNY Canton accepts transfer applicants with a 2.0 GPA.

Stacking Credits and Shortening the Path

If you already have college credits, the transfer rules can matter more than the sticker price. Syracuse accepts up to 90 credits toward its 120-credit degree, and Hilbert does the same with a free official credit evaluation. Hilbert also takes AP, IB, CLEP and DANTES credit and waives general education for students with at least 60 prior credits.

A two-year start is possible, too. Herkimer's A.S. has 64 credits and an optional CompTIA Security+ microcredential, and adults may qualify for free college through the SUNY Reconnect initiative.

Already a bachelor's student? UAlbany's accelerated path counts up to 12 credits toward both degrees, and Mercy offers a five-year B.S./M.S. dual degree.
