Studying Cybersecurity Online in West Virginia

West Virginia's online list is split between homegrown public colleges and a large private online university. American Public University System, based in Charles Town, supplies three of the ten programs and charges one rate to every student.

Marshall University, West Virginia University and two community and technical colleges are public. The University of Charleston is a private nonprofit, and West Virginia Junior College in Morgantown is a private for-profit school.

The master's route has the most choice, with four programs aimed at different backgrounds. The bachelor's route is thinner, with one full degree and one degree-completion program. The median in-state rate across the ten programs is $395 per credit, and the lowest is $219.

Method

How We Chose These Programs

We included every online cybersecurity degree we could verify on the school's own pages where the school is based in West Virginia. Each program is compared on cost, how much of the degree is online, how current the curriculum looks, credential alignment and the school's track record.

Residency-based pricing is labeled as such, and sponsored placements never change a program's position. The full scoring method is on our methodology page.

  • School based in West Virginia, program delivered online
  • In-state rate shown when the school publishes one
  • Scored on the same seven factors as every list and ranked inside its degree level

Charles Town is the home base, but all 120 credits run online in eight-week courses, with a new start each month. Declare Digital Forensics or Privacy and Surveillance if you want to steer toward evidence work or policy, or stay General and finish with the ISSC499 Senior Seminar. Ebooks are free. The $43,200 total at the standard rate is the main trade-off if you don't qualify for a military discount.

    In-State Facts

Degree completion means you arrive with college credit and finish in roughly two years, so it suits a West Virginia IT worker who stalled short of a bachelor's. Admission asks for a 2.0 college GPA, then three prerequisites, which you can test out of with tech experience. The school's standing as an EC-Council training center points to certification-style coursework. With no college credit, pick a four-year path.

    American Public University System

Master of Science in Cybersecurity Studies

    School based in West Virginia

Why it ranks #1: its graduates in this field earn a median $111,755, 100% of its graduate students study fully online (the highest share among master's programs on this list), and its school awards about 223 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Pick this if you already work in IT and want a master's that ends with a choice: a Cybersecurity Studies Capstone or a Capstone Practical, three credits either way. Along the way you'll take Intrusion Detection and Incident Handling, Information Assurance and Computer Forensics. Why it ranks #2: it charges $446 per credit (the lowest among master's programs on this list) and 63% of its graduate students study fully online.

    In-State Facts

Charleston is a private nonprofit, and its master's lets you shape the second half by choosing Cybersecurity Strategy, Cyber Intelligence or Information Assurance. Coursework includes Legal Issues in Cybersecurity and Strategic Cyber Intelligence. Up to nine transfer credits from a regionally accredited school can shorten the 36 credits you pay $446 each for. Labs aren't a listed feature, so look elsewhere for tool-heavy training.

    Master's

    West Virginia University

Master of Science in Business Cybersecurity Management

    School based in West Virginia

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #3: 60% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the highest among master's programs on this list) and its school awards about 32 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS, but its price of $1,063 per credit is the highest among master's programs on this list.

    In-State Facts

Applying takes only the application, transcripts and a resume, and nothing technical is required beforehand, which opens this public Morgantown program to business and operations people. The final project is live work for a corporate partner, and courses lean on Business Cybersecurity Analytics and Information Security Assurance Management. Fees are uncapped: $616 university, $347 college and $100 online per credit, and service members get $100 off each credit.

Why it ranks #4: 57% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years, but its school awards 8 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest among master's programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Marshall describes itself as a recognized National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity, and courses like CYBR 510 Intro to Cybersecurity and CYBR 530 Cybersecurity Policies & Management lay the foundation before your concentration. Admission expects a bachelor's in cybersecurity or a computer science-related field with at least a 2.75 GPA, so career changers from unrelated majors should look elsewhere.

    Associate

    American Public University System

    Associate of Science in Cybersecurity

    School based in West Virginia

    • Fully Online
    • Private for-profit

Why it ranks #1: it charges $360 per credit and 100% of its undergraduates study fully online (the highest share among associate programs on this list).

    In-State Facts

Treat this as a low-commitment first step: 60 credits in eight-week courses, opening with an administrator-focused scripting course and ending with the ISSC298 capstone portfolio. APUS charges the same $360 a credit for its bachelor's, so continuing later doesn't raise your per-credit price. The school publishes one rate, so West Virginia residency doesn't lower the $21,600 total.

    • Private for-profit

Why it ranks #2: 68% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the highest among associate programs on this list) and 90% of its undergraduates study fully online.

    In-State Facts

Linux Essentials and Networking Fundamentals open the sequence, then Cybersecurity Defense and two ethical hacking courses build toward a 90-hour externship. The 95 credits run about 72 weeks on a quarter schedule, faster than a typical two-year associate. Choose it if you want job-ready skills quickly and live near an externship site. It's a specialized associate degree, so ask about transfer before counting on a bachelor's.

Match the West Virginia Degree Level to Where You Are Now

Each level here has a different kind of student in mind. At the associate level, New River and Blue Ridge are public colleges that price by residency, while West Virginia Junior College packs 95 credits into about 72 weeks.

For a bachelor's, the University of Charleston's degree-completion program is built for people who already hold college credit and want to finish in about two years. APUS's bachelor's starts from zero with 120 credits and five concentrations.

The master's level is where background matters most. Marshall expects a cybersecurity or computer science-related bachelor's with a 2.75 GPA. West Virginia University asks only for an application, transcripts and a resume.

Compare Residency Pricing Before You Compare Schools

Only the two community and technical colleges publish a lower rate for West Virginia residents. New River charges $223 per credit to residents and $418 to everyone else.

Blue Ridge charges $219 and $406, and adds a $25 per credit online course fee. A resident pays $13,380 at New River or $13,140 at Blue Ridge before that fee, while a nonresident pays $25,080 or $24,360.

APUS charges $360 per credit for its associate and bachelor's degrees whether you live in Charles Town or Texas, so the associate totals $21,600 and the bachelor's $43,200. Its master's is $470 per credit plus an $85 technology fee per course. The University of Charleston's online bachelor's rate is $395 per credit.

Compare the best affordable online cybersecurity degrees if you are willing to look beyond the state.

Check Whether You Qualify for a Master's Before You Apply

The four master's programs ask for very different things. Marshall's M.S. wants a four-year degree in cybersecurity or a computer science-related field with at least a 2.75 GPA, and it offers Network Security, Application Security and Security Management concentrations.

APUS accepts a bachelor's plus IT coursework, an IT certification such as Security+, or two years of related work experience. The University of Charleston asks for a 2.0 cumulative college GPA for direct entry and lets you choose Cybersecurity Strategy, Cyber Intelligence or Information Assurance.

West Virginia University is the business-side option, with Fall and Spring starts and 3 to 6 semesters to finish. Its price is the highest in the state, so ask about the $100 per credit service member discount if it applies. Our online master's in cybersecurity list shows more choices.

Use Military Rates and Certification Exams to Lower the Bill

Several West Virginia schools publish military pricing. APUS lists $250 per credit through its Preferred Military Rate for active-duty, Guard, Reserve and military families. The University of Charleston lists the same $250 for military, law enforcement and first-responder students in its online undergraduate cybersecurity program. West Virginia University takes $100 off each credit for current and former service personnel.

Certifications can also cut costs. West Virginia Junior College includes the Network+, Security+ and Tech+ exams in tuition and fees, and its program lists CompTIA CySA+ preparation too. West Virginia University lists CISSP training through a partnership with ISC2, the group that issues the CISSP.

See the military-friendly cybersecurity list for more programs with service member pricing.
