How We Chose These Programs
We started with online cybersecurity programs in our database and kept the ones where engineering or secure systems design is the degree focus or a named concentration, or where the school states ABET accreditation. Every program is fully online, online with onsite requirements, or online degree completion.
Inside each degree level we order programs by cost, graduate earnings, completion and online experience, and the page shows the reasoning on each card. ABET status here is what the school says, not a result we checked on ABET's own list.
The full method is on our methodology page.
- Engineering or secure systems in the program name or a concentration
- Delivered online
- ABET status noted as confirmed or stated
Scores combine seven published factors. The methodology page shows each weight and rubric.

Master's
University of the Cumberlands
Master of Science in Information Systems Security (Online)
School based in Kentucky
- Fully Online
- Private nonprofit
Why it ranks #1: it charges $355 per credit (the lowest among master's programs on this list) and its school awards about 260 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list).
Engineering focusCourses run through access control, cryptography, security architecture and design, operations security, and business continuity and disaster recovery planning, which tracks the CISSP exam's subject areas. It ends with ISOL 699, an information security project, instead of a thesis. Pick it if you already work in IT and want broad, exam-minded security knowledge. Engineers who want to build defended systems should look at the school's Cyber Engineering master's instead.

Master's
Colorado Technical University
Master of Science in Computer Science - Cybersecurity Engineering
School based in Colorado
- Fully Online

Why it ranks #8: 100% of its graduate students study fully online (the highest share among master's programs on this list), but 25% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the lowest among master's programs on this list).
Engineering focusThis is a computer science degree, so expect programming and systems coursework with security engineering on top, finishing in a four-credit capstone, CS698. If your bachelor's isn't in computer science or computer engineering, foundation courses CS503 and CS505 come first. Courses last five weeks and starts come about every five weeks, which suits an unpredictable work schedule. Software Engineering and General Track options sit beside the security one.

Telling Engineering Degrees From Security Management Degrees
Titles blur the line, so read the course list. An engineering-style degree has you design, code and test secure systems. At Auburn that means Secure Cloud Computing and Software Reverse Engineering. A management-style degree spends more time on risk, policy and compliance.
Several schools offer both in one building. George Washington University splits its master's into Cybersecurity Analytics and Policy & Compliance, and Wisconsin-Whitewater asks you to choose between Cyber Resilience and Security Engineering. If your goal is to build things, pick the engineering side and check that the capstone is a project, not a paper. If policy sounds closer to your goals, our cybersecurity management list fits better.
What ABET Accreditation Does and Does Not Tell You
ABET reviews individual programs, not whole schools. The schools that state ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission on this list are Anne Arundel Community College, Ashford, Ferris State, Purdue Global, Regent, Cincinnati, North Dakota and Western Governors University. We list them as stated because a school's own page is the source. Before you rely on it, look up the exact degree in ABET's accredited program search.
Most of the named engineering degrees, including Auburn, San Diego and George Washington, do not state ABET, and that isn't a flaw by itself. If a job posting you care about names ABET, filter to the programs above. If none do, weigh the curriculum and labs more heavily. Our ABET-accredited list shows every program that states it.
Matching the Format to Your Work Schedule
Term length changes how a degree feels. Ashford and Colorado Technical University run five-week courses, and Ashford has you take one at a time. San Diego uses seven-week classes, and Regent uses eight-week terms. George Washington meets live on Zoom one evening a week in nine-week sessions, so you need a fixed night. Auburn's courses run 16 weeks, a slower pace that suits steady schedules.
Time to finish matters as much as pace. Auburn's average online student takes three to three-and-a-half years. SANS's master's lists 3 to 5 years. Cincinnati's bachelor's alternates classroom terms with full-time paid co-op, which adds work experience but stretches the plan to about 5 years. Count the full length before you compare tuition.
Costs to Check Before You Apply
Per-credit price is only part of the bill. Ashford charges $460 a credit plus a $115 technology fee on every course. Regent charges $470 a credit part time and $415 at 12 or more credits, plus a $750 services fee each semester.
SANS includes textbooks and GIAC exam fees in its tuition. At the master's level, the median total tuition across all online cybersecurity master's degrees on this site is $25,488, so use that as a yardstick.
Transfer credit can change the math. Auburn accepts up to 6 graduate credits, and SANS's bachelor's is built around up to 70 transfer credits. If your bachelor's is not in computer science, ask each school about foundation courses first, since Colorado Technical University adds CS503 and CS505 before the main sequence. For a price-first view, see our cheapest list.
