The best online cybersecurity associate's degree for you takes about two years and teaches the entry-level skills employers screen for: networking, operating system security, ethical hacking basics and the CompTIA Security+ exam topics. Public technical and community colleges dominate this list because their per-credit prices run far below private schools. Your biggest decisions are residency, lab exams and whether you plan to transfer.

Method

How We Chose These Programs

We looked at every online associate degree in cybersecurity or a close match that we could verify on the school's own pages, then compared tuition per credit, total credits, how much of the degree is fully online, completion and transfer outcomes, and the school's reputation.

Because many associate degrees are built as stepping stones into a four-year program, we also noted transfer agreements and certification prep where schools state them. Full details live on the methodology page.

  • Associate level, delivered online
  • Tuition per credit and total credits confirmed on the school's pages
  • Ranked on the shared methodology within the associate group

Why it ranks #3: 50% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years and its school awards about 21 associate degrees a year in this field per IPEDS.

    Who It Fits

Choose this one if you live in Georgia and want a degree with the NSA's Cyber Defense designation, which the college holds through 2028. • Public

Why it ranks #4: 56% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (higher than 6 of 9 other programs on this list), but its school awards 4 associate degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (fewer than 8 of 9 other programs on this list).

    Who It Fits

The Cyber Range is the draw here. Through a CyberBit partnership, you practice defending against simulated real-world attacks in a virtual lab, which gives a resume something concrete to point to. Coursework also prepares you for Security+, Network+ and Linux administration. Minnesota State College Southeast

    Cybersecurity and Network Administration (A.A.S.)

    School based in Minnesota

    • Fully Online
    • Public

Why it ranks #6: 50.5% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (higher than 5 of 9 other programs on this list) and 37% of its undergraduates study fully online, but its school awards 1 associate degree a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest on this list).

    Who It Fits

Pick this version if you'd rather run networks than chase evidence. Forty-five of the 60 credits are technical, covering cloud security, device hardening, firewalls and intrusion prevention, and the college says the courses line up with 10 certifications from CompTIA, Cisco and Microsoft. The curriculum is designed to match NSA standards, but the school doesn't claim the designation. Budget about $750 for books.

    Georgia Northwestern Technical College

Associate of Applied Science in Cybersecurity (IS23)

    School based in Georgia

    • Online With Campus Requirements
    • Public

Why it ranks #7: it charges $107 per credit (tied for the lowest on this list) and 61% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (higher than 7 of 9 other programs on this list), but its graduates in this field earn a median $40,794 (the lowest on this list).

    Who It Fits

Lab-heavy 4-credit courses in ethical hacking, forensics and network defense make this a hands-on pick at $107 a credit, with no online surcharge. Alabama and Tennessee residents pay the Georgia rate too, which helps nearby out-of-state students. The catch is that finals for four lab courses must be done in person on campus or with an approved proctor, so line up a proctor early.

What an Online Associate Degree Gets You

A cybersecurity associate degree is a two-year credential that covers networking, operating systems and the basics of defending them. It qualifies you for entry-level help desk, network support and junior security analyst work, and it carries credits you can move into a bachelor's degree.

The curriculum is where these programs differ. Albany Technical College lists Network Security, Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing, Computer Forensics and Network Defense and Countermeasures. Community College of Baltimore County goes at firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention, and advanced Linux administration. California Institute of Arts and Technology is a computer information systems degree with cybersecurity woven in, including cloud courses in Azure and AWS.

An associate degree is not a shortcut around certifications. Several schools say their courses prepare you for CompTIA Security+, and St Petersburg College adds A+, Certified Ethical Hacker and Cisco CCNA CyberOps. If you want to compare programs by exam prep, see our list of online cybersecurity degrees with certifications.

How to Judge the Real Cost Before You Apply

Per-credit tuition is only the start. Across the online associate programs we tracked, the median total tuition is $15,822 and per-credit prices range from $107 to $716, so a low sticker price is easy to find if you qualify for it.

Check three things on each school's official page. First, whether your state counts as in-state: Georgia Northwestern also charges the Georgia rate to Alabama and Tennessee residents, while St Petersburg College charges out-of-state students $386.90 a credit.

Second, mandatory fees: Central Georgia Technical College adds $450 a term, and California Institute of Arts and Technology adds a $600 tech fee plus lab fees. Third, books: Minnesota State College Southeast estimates about $750.

Credit count matters too. A 72-credit program at $107 still costs less than a 60-credit program at $247, but you will spend more time in class. If price is your main filter, our list of the best affordable online cybersecurity degrees sorts every level by cost.

Plan for Lab Exams and Proctoring

Cybersecurity is hands-on, and some colleges protect that by requiring in-person assessment even in online programs. Georgia Northwestern Technical College requires lab finals for CIST 1122, CIST 2451, CIST 2452 and CIST 2453 to be taken on campus or with an instructor-approved proctor. Central Georgia Technical College says an online course may require campus visits for exams or hands-on labs and may require proctored assignments.

If you live far from campus, ask admissions before you enroll whether an approved proctor can be a library or testing center near you, and how far ahead you must schedule. Other programs solve the lab problem differently: Southern Arkansas University Tech runs a virtual Cyber Range through a CyberBit partnership, Georgia Military College uses web-based virtual labs, and California Institute of Arts and Technology ships at-home lab kits.

Use the Associate Degree as a Bridge to a Bachelor's

Many students pick this level to start cheaply and finish a four-year degree later. Georgia Military College says its transfer agreements let credits move to dozens of four-year colleges and universities, and its curriculum includes Principles of Computer Programming I and Data Structures I, which line up with bachelor's coursework. It uses quarter hours, so confirm how they convert to semester credits before you count on a specific transfer.

Technical college credits can be harder to move than general education credits, especially from an A.A.S., which is built for employment rather than transfer. If a bachelor's degree is the goal, ask your target school which associate courses it accepts and whether an A.S. fits better. Our guides to online bachelor's degrees in cybersecurity and degree completion programs show where those credits can land.
