Studying Cybersecurity Online in Michigan
Michigan's online options split into public universities (Ferris State, Western Michigan, Michigan-Dearborn, Mid Michigan College), private nonprofits (Davenport, Northwood, Baker, Detroit Mercy). That split mostly predicts price: the private schools charge $465 to $1,148 per credit, while the public bachelor's programs sit near $534 to $685.50. For options outside the state, see our best online cybersecurity degrees.

How We Chose These Programs
We include every online cybersecurity program based at a Michigan school that we could verify on the school's own pages, then group them by degree level and order each group with our published methodology. Prices, credits, formats and admissions rules come from those pages, checked in October 2026. You can read the full method on the methodology page.

Bachelor's
Ferris State University
Bachelor of Science in Information Security and Intelligence
School based in Michigan

- Public
Why it ranks #1: its graduates in this field earn a median $91,678 and its school awards about 32 bachelor's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (more than 4 of 5 other bachelor's programs on this list).
In-State FactsMichigan residents get a public-university bachelor's here where classes can be taken online, in person, or in HyFlex, which lets you join a live session from home. After the core you pick one of five specialty tracks, such as penetration testing or digital forensics and incident response. Tuition is $534 a credit for two years, then $582. The catch is the 3.00 GPA and essay.

Why it ranks #2: 72.5% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the highest among bachelor's programs on this list) and 47% of its undergraduates study fully online (a higher share than 3 of 4 other bachelor's programs on this list).
In-State FactsA Michigan student who wants to study one course at a time will like Northwood's six-week online starts. The 120 credits at $525 add up to $63,000 before roughly $30 a credit for books, and Credit for Prior Learning can shorten that. Coursework includes Cryptography and a Red Team and Blue Team network security class, then a real ethical hacking project. No GRE or GMAT is needed.

Which Michigan Schools Carry Federal Cyber Defense Designations
Employers who hire for government work often look for the NSA and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Academic Excellence label. Three Michigan schools list it.
Davenport University calls itself one of 14 national colleges holding the cyber defense education designation, and it offers it at the associate, bachelor's and master's levels. Ferris State University holds the cyber defense designation and a digital forensics one. Detroit Mercy lists the cyber defense designation for its master's.
Two more schools point toward federal funding. Northwood University says its students can apply for the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service, and Davenport's master's lists full-tuition Department of War scholarships. Ask each school's admissions office who qualifies.
Pick a Michigan Degree Level Based on Where You Start
With no college credit, the Mid Michigan College associate is the low-cost entry. It is a computer information systems degree, not a pure security one, but it includes three Cisco certifications and labs on real Cisco routers and switches. Tuition is charged per contact hour: $168 in-district, $279 out-of-district and $375 out of state. The Davenport associate is more security-specific and uses cyber defense labs for networking, computing and forensics.
If you already have an associate degree, Northwood's B.A.S. asks for 90 credits instead of 120. With a bachelor's in a technical field, the master's programs open up. Western Michigan wants a technical background shown by school or work, a resume and three letters of recommendation.
What Each Michigan Master's Expects Before You Apply
Admissions rules are the main separator among the five master's programs. Michigan-Dearborn requires a STEM bachelor's with a B average and one course each in probability and statistics, programming and calculus II, so career changers from non-technical fields will need prerequisites first.
Ferris State asks for a 3.0 bachelor's GPA and a GMAT of 500 or higher or a GRE score in the upper half, with waivers for a prior master's or a 3.50 GPA.
Davenport and Detroit Mercy list less on their program pages, so call before assuming you qualify. Western Michigan lets you pick between asynchronous courses and a synchronous weekly meeting attended virtually or in person, which is unusual flexibility for a public school.
Compare Michigan Tuition and Total Cost Carefully
Per-credit rates hide big differences. The public master's at Western Michigan lists $868.04 per credit for 30 credits, before the $70.00 or $73.29 per credit college differential. Detroit Mercy lists $1,011 per credit for 30 credits, or $30,330. Davenport's master's runs $1,148 per credit for 31 credits, or $35,588.
At the bachelor's level, Northwood is $525 per credit ($63,000 for 120 credits), Baker College is $465 per credit plus a $350 technology fee each semester, and Western Michigan is $685.50 per credit. Davenport lists $1,059 per credit for Michigan residents and a net $716 for non-residents after a tuition grant, so out-of-state students can pay less there than residents.
