How We Chose These Programs
We started with every online cybersecurity program in our database and kept the ones with a published online per-credit rate. Each level (associate, bachelor's, master's, doctorate) is sorted from the lowest rate up, using the rate an out-of-state online student pays when the school publishes one.
We then added credit counts, estimated tuition, fees and transfer limits from each school's own pages, so you can see the likely total and not just the headline rate. Our full process is on the methodology page.
- A per-credit rate confirmed on the school's tuition or program page
- Ranked by the rate a non-resident online student pays, then by our score
- Mandatory fees are noted but not added to the rate
Scores combine seven published factors. The methodology page shows each weight and rubric.

Courses run online, in person or hybrid, and you finish with a dissertation defended orally. Bring a research statement, two writing samples and a B- in statistics. It suits master's holders who want a CAE-designated school behind the degree.

Compare the Total Bill, Not the Per-Credit Rate
A per-credit price is the number every school quotes first, and it only tells you part of the story. Multiply it by the credits you'll actually take, then add fees.
Take two bachelor's programs on this list. Fort Hays State charges $275.65 a credit over 120 credits. Colorado Technical University's computer science degree charges $340 a credit but requires 183 credits, about $62,220 in tuition. The higher program is a different size of commitment, not a small premium.
Fees can swing it further. Grantham adds a $50-per-credit resource fee for textbooks and technology. Southern Arkansas University Tech lists several per-credit fees on top of tuition, including processing, technology and internet course fees. Ask each school for a full cost sheet before you compare.
When you build your own comparison, use three lines for each school: tuition for the total credits, required fees, and books. Add them up and compare those totals.
Use Transfer Credit and Residency to Cut the Price
Two choices change cost more than which school you pick: how many credits you bring in, and where you're a resident.
On transfer, Eastern Oregon University accepts up to 135 transfer credits and has a path for A.A.S. graduates. Columbia Southern University accepts up to 90 of the 120 credits in its cybersecurity bachelor's degree.
Pair a low-cost associate degree from a technical college with one of these and you may pay bachelor's rates for only part of the degree. At the master's level, Washington University of Science and Technology takes up to 27 credits, and the University of Charleston takes up to 9.
On residency, SUNY Canton charges New York residents $295 a credit and online students from elsewhere $353. Georgia's technical colleges show the same split: $107 for residents and $214 for others, and Central Georgia states that out-of-state tuition is double the Georgia resident rate. If you live in one of those states, check the in-state rate before you rule a program out.
Know What a Low Price Does and Doesn't Include
Cheap doesn't mean thin, but it does mean you should look at what you're getting for the money.
Georgia Tech's online master's uses the same curriculum and faculty as its on-campus degree, and it's part-time, typically two to three years, with courses mostly taught asynchronously. It admits students in fall and spring only, so a missed deadline means a wait. Washington University of Science and Technology runs 10-week quarters with four starts a year, and its 50 percent online discount applies to students in a fully online program.
At the associate level, the lowest rates come from public technical colleges. Albany Technical College charges $1,284 a semester for 12 or more credit hours, capped at 15, and mandatory fees are extra. Fox Valley Technical College estimates $11,000 for tuition and fees plus $210 for textbooks.
If you want an employer to see a recognized designation, look for the National Security Agency's Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense. Eastern Oregon, Dakota State and SUNY Canton hold it for the programs listed here.
Pay for It: Aid, Military Rates and Employer Help
Start with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov. Public schools, including the technical colleges and state universities on this list, take federal aid, and the form is also how you learn what federal loans you qualify for.
Military rates can beat the sticker price. Grantham's Heroes program charges military members and veterans $250 a credit hour, down from $305. Columbia Southern charges active-duty members using tuition assistance $250 a credit hour. Champlain College also lists a $250 military rate.
Before you borrow, ask your employer whether it covers tuition. A cheaper program that you finish part-time while you keep working is usually easier on your budget than a quick one you fund with loans.
