When you look for the best online cyber defense degrees, look for programs that teach you to protect networks, hunt intruders and respond to attacks, and cyber operations degrees add the offensive skills behind that work. This page covers online programs from associate to doctorate. Compare their labs, specializations, prerequisites and price, because those decide how much hands-on practice you actually get.

How We Chose These Programs
We included online programs whose name or concentrations point to cyber defense, cyber operations, network security or ethical hacking. Each program is ranked within its own degree level on one shared scoring method, using cost, graduate earnings, completion, online experience and credentials. Facts come from each school's own program, tuition and admissions pages. You can read the full method on the methodology page.

Why it ranks #1: it charges $495.70 per credit (the lowest among master's programs on this list) and 87% of its graduate students study fully online (a higher share than 6 of 9 other master's programs on this list).
Cyber defense focusCyber defense here means thinking like the attacker. Offensive Security, Malware Analysis and Digital Forensics sit next to Intrusion Detection and Incident Response, and you choose a technical or a management and compliance specialization. It suits developers and sysadmins eyeing defense or federal work, since the NSA designates it a Center of Academic Excellence. Expect a 3.0 GPA and computing-degree requirement.

Why it ranks #2: 95% of its graduate students study fully online (the highest share among master's programs on this list) and its school awards about 1,004 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the most among master's programs on this list).
Cyber defense focusOperations-minded students get their own track at UMGC, separate from its three other cybersecurity master's, and the degree closes with a 3-credit capstone, CYOP 690, that gives you a project to show an employer. Military students pay a $336 per-credit rate, which makes it a natural pick for service members and veterans moving into defense work. Talk to an advisor early to map the 30 credits.

Why it ranks #3: 81% of its transfer students earn a credential within eight years (the highest among master's programs on this list) and its graduates in this field earn a median $148,833.
Cyber defense focusPick a focus area and build ten courses around it: Cyber Operations, Networks, Systems, Analysis, Space Cyber, Cyber Artificial Intelligence or Assured Autonomy. Instructors come from the Applied Physics Laboratory and defense employers, so examples come from real systems. Decisions arrive in two to three weeks with no GRE, and a Bridge Program helps if your background is thin. Prerequisites need a B- or better.

Master's
Boise State University
Master of Science in Cyber Operations and Resilience
School based in Idaho

Why it ranks #4: it charges $550 per credit (lower than 6 of 7 other master's programs on this list), but its school awards 6 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (the fewest among master's programs on this list).
Cyber defense focusCareer changers from business, healthcare, law or education are the people this one is built for. Boise State takes any background, offers technical and non-technical tracks, and awards nine-credit graduate certificates on the way to the degree. Courses run seven weeks with six starts a year, and vendor training from Cisco, Palo Alto and VMware is included. Skip it if you want live classes or a named certification path.

Cyber defense focusFour concentrations decide the second half of the degree: Ethical Hacking and Pen Testing, Digital Forensics, Cloud Security, or Enterprise Cybersecurity Management. Technical tools are demonstrated in virtual labs, and a specialization-based project finishes it. The NSA designation runs through 2028. Four-week courses mean one subject at a time, which suits steady workers but punishes a busy week. Budget for a $135 material fee per course.

Why it ranks #6: 93% of its graduate students study fully online (a higher share than 7 of 9 other master's programs on this list), but its price of $1,500 per credit is the highest among master's programs on this list.
Cyber defense focusHere the SANS courses you take for graduate credit, such as Intrusion Detection In-Depth and Defensible Security Architecture, are the degree. GIAC certification exams are included in tuition, it's DoD 8140 approved, and it ends with a NetWars practicum. You need a current infosec role to get in, and the 3 to 5 year pace is long, so it fits working defenders only.

Cyber defense focusChoose a Cyber Defense or Cyber Operations track after four core courses, then use up to 9 credits for a project, guided study or thesis. That research room, plus the NSF-funded OSIRIS lab, makes it the one for coders eyeing a PhD or a research role. You should already know C++ or Python. Why it ranks #8: it charges $750 per credit, but its school awards about 32 master's degrees a year in this field per IPEDS (fewer than 6 of 9 other master's programs on this list).
Cyber defense focusYou practice offense and defense in the Cyber Virtual Learning Environment, a hosted lab where attacks run on live systems without touching a real network. That makes it hands-on for a fully online degree. Entry requires programming background, shown through coursework, the Python Challenge or the CYBV500 bridge course. Defense, Operations or Network Security: Which One Fits
These three labels overlap, but they point at different daily work. Defense programs focus on monitoring, intrusion detection and incident response. Operations programs add offensive skills, so you learn how attackers get in before you learn to stop them. Network security programs put the infrastructure first, with routing, firewalls and hardening.
Read the course list, not the degree name. Dakota State's master's in cyber defense includes Offensive Security and Malware Analysis next to Intrusion Detection and Incident Response. Its cyber operations bachelor's adds Malware Analysis and Offensive Network Security next to Defensive Network Security. NYU lets you pick a Cyber Defense or Cyber Operations track after four core courses.
If you want to run a security operations center, choose a defense program. If penetration testing or malware work appeals to you, choose operations and check that the labs are real.
How to Judge Labs in an Online Degree
Hands-on practice is the hardest thing to deliver online, so ask each school how it works. The strongest setups give you live systems to attack and defend in a contained environment. Arizona's Cyber Virtual Learning Environment does this, and SANS builds capture-the-flag challenges into courses such as Intrusion Detection In-Depth.
Some schools lean on vendor training instead. Boise State includes Cisco, Palo Alto and VMware academy resources, and Dakota State is a Cisco Networking Academy. Those teach specific tools well but are not the same as open-ended attack and defense practice.
Before you apply, ask three things. Which courses use labs? Are they graded work or optional? Do you keep access after you finish? A school that answers clearly has probably built something real.
What NSA Designations and ABET Accreditation Mean
Two kinds of credentials appear on this list. The NSA designates schools as Centers of Academic Excellence, with separate designations for cyber defense and cyber operations. Dakota State holds both kinds across its programs, and its undergraduate cyber operations degree carries the operations designation.
ABET accredits programs against engineering-style standards and is a separate check. Ferris State and the University of North Dakota hold it. Employers in government and defense contracting often recognize all three, though a designation does not guarantee a job.
Check whether the credential belongs to the program you would take or only to the school or a research center. NJIT's NSA designation, for example, belongs to its Cybersecurity Research Center, not to the online degree itself. Ask the admissions office to confirm in writing.
Choosing a Level and Paying for It
Master's and bachelor's programs make up most of this list. Doctorates and associate degrees are rare, and the ones here come from Dakota State and Davenport.
Bachelor's programs take 120 credits, so total tuition adds up. Dakota State's cyber operations bachelor's runs about $44,856 before fees, while Davenport's cyber defense bachelor's totals $85,920 at its non-Michigan rate. If you hold prior credits, UMGC accepts up to 90 transfer credits toward its cyber operations bachelor's, and SANS accepts up to 70.
For master's programs, compare format as well as price. Four-week courses at National University suit people who want one subject at a time. Arizona offers a single fall start, so missing the window costs a year.
