Verdict
Our Verdict on the M.S.
This is Albany's investigation-minded master's, and only part of it is fully online. If you want the online route, you take the Cybersecurity track, which pairs a 30-33 credit core with a summer internship or thesis. If you want forensics-specific tracks, expect a partly in-person experience.
The Master of Science in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity at the University at Albany, a public research university in the State University of New York system, has several tracks. The school labels one of them, Cybersecurity, as a fully online option and says the other tracks are partially online.
So the first question to ask is which track you are actually signing up for, because that decides whether you can finish from home.
The degree includes 30-33 credits of coursework over two semesters, followed by a 3-6-credit summer internship or thesis in which you solve a real-world problem. The page also says GMAT or GRE scores are optional.
Albany also offers a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Risk. That sibling is organized around risk, compliance and privacy concentrations and is delivered fully online. This one puts forensics next to security, and the online path is narrower.
Cost
In-State and Out-of-State Tuition
Online graduate tuition and fees combined are $540.38 per credit for New York residents and $634.38 for non-residents. The school publishes those as the rate for students enrolled below 12 credits, for Fall 2026 or Spring 2027.
With a 30-33 credit core and 3-6 credits of internship or thesis, the credit count you pay for depends on the choices you make, so ask the bursar for a written estimate using your track and capstone option.
The online rate applies when you are enrolled in an exclusively online program. If you pick a partially online track, ask which rate applies to the semesters you spend on campus.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- You want a master's that mentions digital forensics in the title, and you are willing to do the Cybersecurity track to stay fully online.
- You are interested in incident response or investigation work and expect to do an internship during the summer.
- You would rather not sit a GMAT or GRE, since test scores are optional for admission.
- You are a New York resident who wants the $540.38 per credit online graduate rate at a public university.
Who Should Skip It
- You want every forensics track delivered online. The school says the other tracks are only partially online, so you could face in-person requirements.
- You want a risk, policy or health-privacy focus. The Cybersecurity and Risk master's at the same school has concentrations built for that.
Curriculum
Two Concentrations and the Core Courses
The shape of the degree is clear: 30-33 credits of coursework spread over two semesters, then a summer capstone that is either a 3-6-credit internship or a thesis.
That compressed first stage suggests a faster pace than a program that stretches coursework across several years, so ask whether the two-semester plan assumes full-time study. If you are working, find out how the school expects you to fit the load.
The forensics label is the part to pin down. Ask the department which courses cover evidence handling, disk and network forensics, and which of them are available in the fully online Cybersecurity track.
Standout Features
- Cybersecurity track is offered as a fully online option
- UAlbany is designated a Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity by the NSA (school-level designation stated on the page)
- Concentrations
- Cybersecurity (fully online option), other tracks are partially online
- Thesis
- Yes
- Internship or Practicum
- 3-6-credit summer internship or thesis.

Online
The Online Format
Online here is track-specific. Cybersecurity is the fully online option, and the other tracks are described as partially online. Federal data shows that 26% of the university's graduate students study exclusively online, so most of the graduate body is still on campus or in a blended format.
Ask whether classes meet live, and ask for start dates beyond the two-semester coursework plus summer capstone. A person with a day job should ask exactly how many hours per week the compressed schedule asks for, and whether the summer internship can be done at your current employer.
Credentials
Accreditation and Where It Leads
The degree is a Master of Science. UAlbany says the National Security Agency designates the university a Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity, and that is a school-level designation.
Forensics employers often ask for specific credentials, so ask the department which exams the coursework supports and treat any certification as separate study.
The internship or thesis finish gives you evidence of applied work, which is the strongest credential in a field where hiring managers want to see cases you have handled.

Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- Only the Cybersecurity track is fully online. Other tracks are partially online, so check for in-person requirements.
- The two-semester coursework plan is compressed, which can be hard to combine with a full-time job.
- The summer internship or thesis adds 3-6 credits on top of the core.
