Verdict
Is Georgia Institute of Technology Worth It?
Georgia Tech's online M.S. in Cybersecurity is a ten-course, part-time master's degree that costs about $12,000 in tuition and carries the same name as the on-campus degree. It suits working technologists who want a recognized research-university credential without leaving their job. The tradeoffs are a slow pace, a tight admissions file, and an online fee on top of tuition.
This is a 32-credit degree built from ten courses, offered through Georgia Tech's Professional Education unit. Georgia Tech says online students earn the same degree, with the same curriculum and faculty, as the on-campus M.S. in Cybersecurity. That matters if you want a diploma that doesn't carry an "online" asterisk.
It's designed for people with jobs. Most students take it part time, and the school describes two to three years as typical, with up to six years allowed to finish. There are two entry points a year, fall in August and spring in January.
You choose one of three tracks: Information Security, Cyber-Physical Systems, or Policy. The track you pick shapes your electives and also shapes who the degree fits best, which is why the choice deserves real thought before you apply. Georgia Tech runs just this one cybersecurity degree online, so the choice you make is the track, not the program.

Cost
How Much It Costs at $387 a Credit
Tuition is charged per credit hour: $373 for Georgia residents, $387 for other U.S. students and $406 for international students. Georgia Tech puts total tuition at roughly $12,000, and 32 credit hours at $387 comes to $12,384.
The online learning fee is separate. It's $531 per semester when you take four or more credit hours and $212 per semester when you take fewer than four. Because most students go part time over several years, the number of semesters you stay enrolled affects the fee total, so ask the school to model your pace.
Qualified U.S. veterans may be eligible for GI Bill support for tuition, mandatory fees, books and housing.

Fit
Who Should Apply, and Who Should Not
Who It Fits
- Software engineers, network engineers and analysts who already work in technology and want a graduate credential that signals depth to hiring managers.
- Career changers with a technical bachelor's who can show the three references, essays and resume the application asks for.
- Policy-minded professionals in government, compliance or law who want the Policy track and are comfortable with technical material.
- Anyone watching total cost. At $387 per credit hour across 32 credit hours, tuition lands at $12,384 before the online learning fee, which is low for a degree from a research university.
Who Should Skip It
- Students who want a fast sprint. The program is part time, and two to three years is the stated norm, so it won't get you a master's in a year.
- Anyone who needs live, scheduled classes every week. Courses are typically asynchronous, with synchronous sessions limited to office hours and group project meetings.
- Applicants without a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, since that is a baseline requirement.
Curriculum
Three Concentrations and the Core Courses
The degree is ten courses and 32 credit hours. Georgia Tech lists three tracks: Information Security, Cyber-Physical Systems, and Policy. Cyber-Physical Systems is the unusual one. It looks at security for systems where software controls physical equipment, which is a different problem from protecting a web application.
The Policy track, by its name, centers on the rules and decisions around security rather than hands-on engineering. The school's own page describes the degree as interdisciplinary, so expect policy and technical thinking to sit side by side rather than in separate silos. Read the current course list on the Professional Education page before you choose a track, since electives are what separate one track from another.
Standout Features
- Only interdisciplinary cybersecurity degree from a U.S. News Top 10 public university that can be earned online, for total tuition around $12,000
- Same degree, curriculum and faculty as the on-campus M.S. in Cybersecurity
- Concentrations
- Information Security, Cyber-Physical Systems, Policy

Online
The Online Format
Courses are typically taught asynchronously, so you can study and watch content when it fits your day. Georgia Tech says there may be synchronous virtual office hours with faculty and teaching assistants, plus group project meetings you'll need to schedule with classmates.
That mix works well for people in different time zones or on shift schedules, but group work still needs overlapping hours. The program is fully online, with no campus residency. Enrollment happens in the fall and spring, so missing a deadline can cost you six months.

Credentials
Accreditation and Where It Leads
The degree is a Master of Science in Cybersecurity, the same credential on-campus students receive. The school's institutional accreditation is listed on its accreditation page. Think of industry certifications as something you'd pursue separately, because the degree isn't tied to a single exam. The GRE isn't required. You may submit GRE or GMAT scores if you'd like, but they aren't needed for admission.

Trade-Offs
Drawbacks to Weigh
- Admission asks for three references, essays and a resume, which takes real preparation time compared with open-enrollment programs.
- Only two start dates a year, fall and spring, so timing matters.
- The online learning fee adds to the tuition figure and recurs each semester you're enrolled.
- Part-time pacing over two to three years means a long stretch of nights and weekends.
